Iran's Foreign Minister Is Touring Pakistan, Oman, and Russia in a Single Weekend — Washington Is Sending Two Envoys to Meet Him

Abbas Araghchi is boarding a plane to three capitals in three days. In Islamabad, he will sit across from Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The message from Tehran is coded: "our neighbors are our priority" — which is diplomatic language for "we still have options."

This weekend is not about a breakthrough. It is about both sides proving they still want to talk. The floor of the crisis is holding — for now.

A three-country tour is not a negotiating position; it is a posture. By flying to Pakistan, Oman, and Russia in rapid sequence, Araghchi is signaling that Iran has regional depth that Washington cannot easily close. Pakistan holds the land bridge to Central Asia. Oman holds the back-channel tradition — every important U.S.–Iran message of the last decade has passed through Muscat at some point. Russia holds the military-industrial lifeline. Putting all three on the calendar in a single weekend is a reminder that Iran is not being cornered, it is choosing. The fact that Witkoff and Kushner are meeting him on Pakistani soil, not in a neutral European capital, is itself a concession. Tehran wanted the meeting somewhere that read as Global South, somewhere that signaled "we are not walking into your house." Islamabad fit that need, and Washington said yes because the alternative — no meeting at all — would have left the Hormuz blockade to metastasize into something uglier. The seating arrangement, the choice of city, the order of visits: all of it is negotiation before the negotiation. What comes out of this weekend will not be a deal. It will be a communiqué, carefully worded, committing nothing that can be breached and promising nothing that must be delivered. The real signal is simply the fact of the meeting: after weeks of escalation — blockade, ship seizures, oil spills, a Navy Secretary dismissed — both sides are still at a table. That is the floor of this crisis. Everything above it is still in play.
